It’s finally spring: The sun is shining, the temperature has warmed and we can walk the sidewalks in peace knowing that no ice is hiding beneath our feet. I hope that you’re taking the opportunity to turn your back on the gym and greet the wonder that is taking your exercise routine outdoors.
There are a few things to take into consideration before launching yourself into a new running season. Before you get ready to run, go through this quick checklist from bottom to top:
Sneakers: When you’re running outside you’re dealing with a whole new set of terrain: rocky gravel paths, root-filled trails through parks, uneven pavement, et cetera. Now that you’re off the smooth-gliding treadmill you want to make sure that you’re providing your joints with enough support. One rule of thumb is to replace your runners every 200 miles (about 320 km). Not sure what’s on your pair’s odometer? It’s probably time for a replacement.
Shorts, Capris & Pants: Just because your tatty pair of gym shorts has kept you through the Canadian winter doesn’t mean you want to be busting those bad boys out on the street. Invest in a quality pair of running wear that will keep you warm and your movements fluid. We’re fans of the stretchy variety (think lululemon) as they make stretching in public much more private!
Stomach: Fact: Running outside burns more calories than running on the treadmill. Unlike running indoors, the streets outside provide challenging hills and obstacles that you must navigate with greater effort (even though you may not notice them while you’re jogging along.) Be sure to fuel up with some carbohydrates before you head out, and always, always bring a bottle of water along. Don't forget: You’re running in the sun!
Skin: While we’re on the topic of sun, remember that you aren’t running beneath the awe-inspiring wattage of dim gym lighting. Protect yourself against the strengthening rays with sunscreen and shade your pretty face with a hat!
Sound: Pump up the pace with a brand-new set of upbeat tunes. Lifestyle suggests that you do not wear headphones if you’re running through city streets, however. Instead, only listen with one ear so that you can monitor your surroundings with the other.
Stretching: Don’t forget to stretch out after a long run. Stretching after your muscles have been thoroughly warmed by an invigorating workout allows you to push your body further to develop that lean tone we’re all hoping for come bikini season. Don’t go home to stretch, though! Settle in the grass at a park, beneath a tree or even on a sunny bench to enjoy every minute of your outdoor exercise experience.
