The Slippery Slope to Victory

I think it’s fair to say that I’m obsessed with watching the Winter Olympics. I feel as though I know our athletes personally, and have been reduced to tears when I watch them celebrate their well-deserved victories. Watching so many events, however, has left me feeling somewhat deluded; it’s not uncommon for me to blurt things out like, “Hey! Maybe I could get into speed skating!” My latest interest? The bobsleigh. It’s making headlines all across Canada as we took home both the gold and silver medals in Wednesday’s race. The gold went to Canadian pair Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse, while their fellow teammates... MORE

Put the Petal to the Metal

It looks like a bike, you ride it like a bike — but it’s not... Well, sort of. Confusing? Before you can even register a “huh?” this bike-but-not-really-a-bike zooms past you. It’s called an ebike, or electric bike, and I see them whizzing all over the city. They resemble conventional bicycles but also motor scooters. Since Oct. 3, 2009, ebikes are permanently allowed on roads and highways, where they must follow the same rules of the road as set out in the Highway Traffic Act that currently applies to cyclists. Even though it’s still fitted with pedals, the bicycle runs on a motor fitted in the bottom bracket. You can pedal along in tandem with the motor or as little as you want, but... MORE

Sky’s Never the Limit

I know many people who just love a good thrill. Some of them play sports like rugby, while others make an annual trip to their favourite amusement parks to ride roller coasters for a day. However, these very people have told me that sometimes, they want something more exciting — like the tallest roller coaster in the world has become sort of boring. Being the type to consider a great, suspenseful book a thrill — I have never understood this “problem” people have. But, I suppose that when speed skating, playing rugby, riding roller coasters and downhill skiing don’t quite live up to the rush you’re looking for — try looking up. The AJ Hackett Macau Tower in China is host to ... MORE

Yo, Ho, Ho, and a Bottle of Antiemetics

There’s nothing like a warm, ocean breeze through your hair and the view of the water to reinvigorate the senses – or make you wish you had just stayed home. Many people dream of buying a boat and taking a sea voyage around the world. Many people who dream this dream also never quite get around to doing it - for multiple reasons. Often times, the most compelling reason is that a lot of people get on boats and can’t keep their lunch down long enough to weigh anchor. Landlubbers rejoice! Luxury boat and yacht brand Ferretti is using the Anti Rolling Gyro (ARG) stabilizer technology to create anti-seasickness yachts. ARG works with a 154-pound gyroscope made of steel and aluminum. The gyroscope – which is located in the yacht’s hull – spins against... MORE
