A great
pair of denim is a universal staple in every person’s closet — no matter the age, gender or season. Depending
on the cut, wash and fit, jeans can be worn for a range of occasions, be it running errands or attending a
cocktail party with classic add-ons such as a sharp blazer and silk pochette. A visit to Dutil Denim makes it
easy to find the right jeans for you. Why? It’s an all-denim boutique that not only houses trendy and classic
brands such as Acne, Domino, Naked & Famous and Levi’s, but also carries their own line, “The
Quintessential Series.”
Founder and
creative director Eric Dickstein says he’s spent hundreds of hours trying to perfect his Quintessential line
of jeans, which he launched in May 2010. He makes denim “from the oldest existing denim mill in North
Carolina” and manufactures them in L.A.
Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood was the first to see Dutil’s doors open in April 2006, and this year, a
store on Toronto’s Queen Street West was unveiled. The decor at the new Toronto store evokes an old repair
shop combined with a 1960s gas station and bookstore, with vintage sewing machines, leather library chairs
and rolled-up jeans stacked on wooden shelves around the shop.
“My design philosophy is the balance between fashion and functionality,” says Dickstein. “I feel it should be
the person wearing our jeans, not the jeans wearing the person.”
