Rainy Days Never Tasted So Good

Don’t let the name fool you — Momofuku shows how compost cookies can be delicious

By Sarah DiVito | March 26, 2010

Your cupboards are most likely bursting with forgotten snacks and foods that have piled up over the year.

You’ve simply picked at these sweet and salty treats and then discarded them amongst the rest. But you shouldn’t be ashamed of the half-eaten box of Ritz crackers or bag of mini chocolate chips that
has been nibbled at.

Momofuku Milk Bar has the perfect solution for you — they call them “compost cookies.”

It is a basic cookie recipe, but the idea is to add whatever you have in your cupboards into the mixture. It sounds repulsive but customers can’t seem to get enough.

Anderson Cooper, journalist and television personality, has absolutely raved about these cookies, saying that they were the best he has ever tasted. That’s a huge statement to make and he goes to on to say, “I don’t know what’s in it, but it’s like magic.”

It’s perfect for one of those dreary rainy days when you’re cooped up in the house with your spouse, siblings or kids.  You probably have a sudden urge to bake but you have no motivation to fight through the cold rain and wind to grab yummy ingredients for cookies.  This is where your over-stuffed cupboards and hyper family members come in. Grab the kids and take all the half-filled bags of goodies and create your own cookie.  It is something for them to enjoy and an adventure because every bite you take will be as mysterious as the last.

Now, you’ll be able to make them in the comfort of your own home because Lifestyle has discovered the recipe and we’re sharing the dirt. We think that everyone should attempt to make them because of our over-stocked cupboards and because most of us are not fortunate enough to live in New York City, where Momofuku Milk Bar bakes up these delicious treats every day.

The recipe for the most tasty cookies goes as follows:

Cream together:
   • 1 cup butter
   • 1 cup sugar
   • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
   • 1 tbsp corn syrup
   • 1 tsp vanilla extract
   • 2 eggs

Add into mixture and blend together:
  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp salt

Once you have the dough, grab anything and everything you have in your cupboard. Don’t hesitate — take out all your discarded snacks. You can add whatever you have in the house and that’s the whole point!

Stir in 1 1/2 cups of your favourite baking ingredients or snacks. Add the salty ingredients first. Christina Tosi, pastry chef and owner of Momofuku, says that Ritz Crackers, Fritos and fish crackers are what they usually put into the cookies. Then add the sweet ingredients like mini chocolate chips, Rolos and Raisinettes.

Get a six-ounce spoon or an ice-cream scooper and place them far apart on a baking tray. They spread out so don’t flatten. Place in the fridge for one hour. Preheat oven for 400 F and let them bake from 9-10 minutes.

… And… voila! Compost cookies — one of the most delectable cookies you’ll bake and eat.•
