Light,
fresh, delicate, playful, mystical — these are some of the words being used to describe this season’s trends
for spring perfumes.
When looking for a new perfume, take into consideration some of the things that we love so much about spring:
the fresh petals of delicate spring blossoms, dewy grass, and the promises of summer fruit. With this in
mind, the ideal spring scent captures the sweet smells of life after a frozen winter. Unlike the stronger
fall perfumes that boast of richer, warmer notes, spring perfumes should compliment your look, not overpower
it.
My personal favourites for spring are: DNKY, Be Delicious; Clinique, Happy; and as an evening scent, Euphoria
Spring Tradition by Calvin Klein:
Donna Karan’s Be Delicious boasts of a sweet apple fragrance with a sophisticated blend of exotic flowers and
the woods. It is a light and refreshing scent with tones of apple, cucumber, grapefruit, magnolia, tuberose,
violet, sandalwood and white amber.
Clinique Happy is a best-selling blend of citrus and flowers with notes of ruby red grapefruit, bergamot,
Hawaiian wedding flower and mimosa. “Wear it and be happy” — and make everybody within scent-range happy,
too!
Euphoria Spring Tradition is a beautiful perfume with notes of pear blossom, guava leaves and waterfall. It
can double as an evening scent in that it hints at mysterious undertones of frozen musk, dewy violets and
amber. More than just cheery and light, Euphoria’s dark tones add the perfect mysticism for a candlelight
dinner.
How to buy a new perfume:
1.
It goes without saying to try the
perfume before you buy it. Never buy perfumes for the first time online.
Though the descriptions are enticing, you may find
the blend of scents too strong in person.
2.
Apply the perfume to the skin of your
inner wrist and wait for 10-15 minutes for the perfume to react with
your skin before deciding on a purchase. While the perfume
may smell one way on the tester, it will react
chemically to everybody’s skin differently. Use this
time to learn about the line’s body lotions and shower
gels, or ask for product samples to try.
3.
Once you’ve determined that you
like the way the perfume smells on your body, close the deal. I highly
suggest that you purchase the shower gels and
body lotions available from the same line. We live in a
heavily-scented world and your perfume will be the most
noticeable when not drowned beneath a
variety of scented products.
How to prolong your
perfume:
1.
A trick to making your perfume last
is to keep it in a cool, dark place. An ideal option for perfume storage
is, surprisingly, your refrigerator. Not only will this keep
your perfume’s scent intact, the coolness of the
spray itself will add to the overall freshness of your
spring scent.
2.
In the “how-to-buy” section, we
touched briefly on the (very good) idea of purchasing body lotions and
shower gels. Not only do these prevent your
perfume from being overpowered, as mentioned above, but
they allow you to use less of the fragrance itself. As these
secondary products will contribute to the
overall scent left on your skin, your bottle of perfume will
last much longer.
How to wear your perfume:
1.
To begin, apply perfume before
wearing any jewelry or clothing. Not only will this ensure the scent remains
with you as your outfits change, this will eliminate
the unlikely possibility of stains.
2.
Location, location, location.
Perfume application is so much more than “spritz-and-go” application.
Perfume is best applied to the body’s pulse-points;
where your pulse is strongest and closest to the
surface of your skin. Apply it to your inner wrists and
elbows, behind your ear lobes and the hollow
of your throat. You may also apply this behind your ankles
and knees (scent rises) to leave a fleeting
fragrance in your wake.
3.
You will need to reapply your
perfume at least once during the day. Even the best fragrances only last 3-4
hours. Many lines carry convenient purse-sized
bottles that make touch ups a breeze.
4.
Less is more — especially with
perfumes. It is far better to be too subtle than to overwhelm your
colleagues and families.•
