Preparing for the SAT may sound intimidating, but
time, effort and a sound preparation technique will prove it to be much easier than you think. The SAT
is quite a predictable test, and through practice you can be well prepared for it. What you need to do is
define an organized study plan and stick to it. Preparing in advance is key; the more hard work you put in
the early stages of your preparation, the better result you can expect.
Foremost, make a plan and avoid procrastination, as the best scorers work less as the test date approaches
and do all of the preparation well in advance. Set demanding yet reasonable daily targets for yourself and do
not postpone your daily session. Whether for the SAT or any other test, self-discipline is the key
element that will help you get through with flying colours.
Acquaint yourself with the test pattern, as SATs follow the same structure, and familiarity will come in
handy on test day. Try and take as many practice tests as possible. Mock tests help you to become familiar
with the pattern of questions and help you assess your strong and weak areas. Budget your preparation time
around the subjects that you have the most difficulty with.
When selecting the study material, select the toughest material, master it well and do take self-tests.
Should you be facing repeated problems in one specific area of study, enlist the help of a SAT tutor, or take
a preparation class to help you conquer the challenging topic.
The SAT exam is divided into three main sections: reading, writing and mathematics; each section is further
divided into sub-sections. The test is composed of both subjective and objective questions. For English, read
as much as possible as this helps to build your vocabulary as well as increase critical reasoning. Make sure
to read the newspaper and news magazines to keep yourself abreast of the latest happenings. For mathematics,
memorize your formulas and use practice problems to improve your speed and accuracy.
Start studying as soon as you register for the test and avoid last-minute study at all costs. You don’t want
any late-night cram sessions before the exam. Preparing in advance gives you the time to review and revise
important notes, which will ensure better retention of information. Take practice tests and dedicate more
time to the areas that you find the most challenging. In addition, take a full mock test in a SAT-simulated
environment to help reduce stress on the actual test day.
An important aspect of your performance depends largely on your outlook; it is important that you approach it
with an attitude to succeed. Prepare well, and be confident in your preparation. The most important factor
when it comes to facing tests is a positive state of mind, which can only be achieved through hard work and
dedication.•
