If you
wear glasses or contacts chances are you’ve thought about having laser vision correction. The first step to
take for anyone considering the procedure is to have a preoperative consultation (at LASIK MD these are free
and only take about two hours). Each patient goes through several sophisticated tests to determine various
eye characteristics. This allows us to determine if you are not only a candidate for laser vision correction,
but it also lets us know which specific procedure (Standard Lasik, Custom Lasik, PRK, etc.) is right for you.
So what is the difference between LASIK and PRK?
PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, laser eye surgery is similar to LASIK eye surgery
in the sense that both procedures employ a computer-controlled laser to reshape the cornea of the affected
eye. During the standard LASIK procedure, the
surgeon preserves the epithelium (the outermost protective layer of the eye) by creating a flap. With
PRK vision
correction, the epithelium is removed by gently polishing off the surface (i.e. no flap is created).
Anesthetic drops in the eye ensure that the patient experiences as little discomfort as
possible.
While both treatments are highly effective, each is recommended depending on the
patient’s individual eye characteristics. PRK is an excellent alternative when LASIK is not an option, as it
is suitable for those with less corneal tissue or very high prescriptions. However, patients must keep in
mind that PRK is also characterized by a lengthier healing process. During your consultation, we can
determine which procedure is best suited to your needs.
