Many people spend a lot of time
and money on the design and décor for the inside of their homes, however the backyard and patio always seem
to play second fiddle. Here are some ideas to help you create an inspiring and luxurious outdoor living space
that will get you craving warmer days (as if you needed another reason).
Furniture
To create a modern feel, look for sharp, square lines in chic shades like grey and dark brown with accents of brighter colours, like teal and orange. Wicker and teak, while still popular, are giving way to new, innovative, synthetic materials like polystyrene that look completely natural, yet are fade- and mildew-resistant. Nowadays, most major design stores, like Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma and Ethan Allen have outdoor design sections. But also stores are beginning to open that specialize in outdoor furniture. One example is Toronto-based Andrew Richard Designs whose focus is solely on outdoor design.
Space
Creating cozy nooks and crannies, whether indoors or out, is an important element. Outdoors, where there are no ‘literal’ walls, it’s important to delineate space. Big spaces can be made to feel intimate by using flower-covered trellises, pavilions and outdoor area rugs. Positioning chairs, ottomans and tables into little vignettes all help.
Ambience
The sound of a waterfall, fountain or running stream, can make you feel calmer. Use of lighting, such as lanterns that come in many colours and styles (from Moroccan and Chinese to seaside) will create a welcoming atmosphere. And just like indoors, accessories help to finish off a space. Cushions, pillows and throws in bold colours, such as neons, interesting patterns, stripes or ikat prints. Statues and garden art all help to give your space personality and character.
