“...
the accidents Langstroth curates could be read as vestiges of lives: Those found jostling about in
contemporary cities or, more touchingly, in the haze of memory, where abstraction and figuration have always
found perfect marriage.” — David Balzer, art
critic
Chris Langstroth has been a full-time artist for over 20 years after attending Ontario College of Art, and
graduating later from Ryerson University in Toronto, specializing in film and photography. He has
participated in numerous solo, group and juried exhibitions, and has his works in many corporate and private
collections.
By using thick paint and knives to apply multiple wet layers or dig through existing layers, the artist often
makes his work balance on the edge of abstraction and figuration.
Langstroth explains: “The ongoing challenge in making pictures is to understand and control the effect
produced by the interaction of abstract marks and the things being represented. The marks themselves tend to
be difficult to control, but unpredictability keeps the process interesting, and the potential for new
discoveries is always there.”
From Sept. 22 to Oct.
9, Langstroth will be showing his work at the Kurbatoff Art Gallery, located in the heart of South
Granville’s Gallery Row in Vancouver. •
Opening reception with the artist in attendance
Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, from 2 to 4 p.m.
