While it’s not as widely publicized as Avatar was, tomorrow is another massive step forward in our 3D evolution.
Samsung is releasing the 3D LED TV, the first of its kind, although there will be more to follow from Panasonic, Sony, LG and Toshiba.
The technology used for these televisions is only slightly different to what it is at the movies. Movie 3D glasses filter and restrict light that reaches your eye while 3D TV glasses actively block images that are displayed by your television — both operating on the principle that each eye sees its own version of the image to make it 3D.
At this point in time, current televisions cannot be upgraded to be 3D and new HDMI 1.4 cables are required for 3D TV. With these new cables, you might then need to also purchase an audio-video receiver that is HDMI 1.4-compatible.
A 3D Blu-ray player will also be needed with the new television, but the Playstation 3 game console should be fine via an online update. Microsoft and Nintendo haven’t said anything yet about 3D gaming for the Xbox 360 and Wii.
If you get a 3D TV, however, you won’t be stuck in 3D. The 3D feature can be turned off to display 2D content.
And 3D content is limited right now, but if you’re all about being ahead of the curve, head out to stores tomorrow!
